On Wednesday 26th August, the Year 7/8 Coonabarabran High School debating team consisting of Ella Atkinson, Bree O’Neill, Ivolet McAway-Davis, Tahni Bowaker, Josie Strong and Kayla Harris, had their first debate of the year. We were pitted against a side from Narrabri and had the added difficulty of having to debate via zoom. The topic for the debate was ‘That Years 7 and 8 students should only study English, Maths, Science, History and Geography’ and we won the flip of the coin to gain the affirmative side.
Our team line centred around the idea that success at school meant success in the core subjects, and the team came up with some strong arguments in support of the topic – connecting education with the ability to get a job and the growing of a strong economy for Australia. Kayla Harris and Bree O’Neill acted as chairperson and timekeeper for the debate.
Unfortunately, we didn’t come away with a win, however, the adjudicator has given us some great feedback from which to build our skills in future debates. The next debate will be held in Week 7 against Armidale Secondary. I would like to congratulate the team on their mature and enthusiastic approach to the team and their debating skills. Well done Team!
