On 24 April, staff attended a morning of learning and sharing at Burra Bee Dee. The school’s AEO , Alison Stanton, accompanied by local Elders, Aunty Margaret Robinson, Aunty Maureen Sulter, Aunty Madge Nixon and Uncle Casey Dowd, generously shared their knowledge and experience of local Indigenous history and in particular, the Elders shared their experience of growing up at Burra Bee Dee.
The morning commenced with a Welcome to Country from Uncle Casey Dowd and Aunty Maureen Sulter, followed by a smoking ceremony conducted by Uncle Casey. Aunty Maureen and Alison then took staff on a guided tour of Burra Bee Dee whilst Aunty Margaret , Uncle Casey and Aunty Madge shared their experiences with staff.
The morning concluded with a brief Q and A session with the Elders in the school library.
All staff found the morning hugely valuable, and at times very moving and are grateful for the time given so generously by Alison and the Elders.
